Dobby

house elves of harry potter

He was probably placed there because at the time, he admired strong, brave individuals like James Potter and Sirius Black. Houses at Hogwarts are the living and learning communities for its students. Each year a group of a certain house shares the same Dormitory and classes.

The pair were never going to be best friends, but by the end of the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry wondered if Kreacher would make him a sandwich. Despite the multitude of ways in which Dobby accidentally caused more aggro for Harry, at the end of Chamber of Secrets, Harry freed Dobby from his servitude – tricking Lucius Malfoy into handing the house-elf a sock. We first met Dobby when he appeared in Harry’s bedroom in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, determined to save Harry’s life. And by ‘save Harry’s life’ we mean ‘stop him getting on the Hogwarts Express, forcing him to fly a car into a murderous tree’. Dobby started off as a little frustrating for Harry (you know, like blocking him trying to go to the one place in the world he felt happy), but once we got to know him, the house-elf was a dear friend – and to Ron and Hermione, too.

What Hogwarts House is Maggie Smith in?

The memory Harry witnessed was one of Voldemort’s visits to Hepzibah, where he altered Hokey’s memory after having the house-elf slip the poison into her cocoa. To have the creatures specifically called 'elves' may be an allusion to the fairy tale of The Elves and the Shoemaker, where a group of elves worked for a shoemaker until his wife, in a fit of generosity, sewed them little clothes and gave them to the elves. Sir Nicholas explained to them that the house-elves worked in hiding, and it was considered the mark of a good house-elf that they did all the work but their existence was not even noticed.

Hogwarts Houses

They are “bound” to the family of the house, which means they do all manner of menial tasks for them until they die. House-elves are apparently very happy with this arrangement and consider it a matter of pride that they serve faithfully and do not betray their families. Better at heart, and more strongly magical, the one thing that held the house-elves back from domination was their inclination to serve.

Without Sam’s undying loyalty to Frodo and the Shire, the mission to destroy the ring surely would have failed. At one point, Albus Dumbledore observed that his loyal, courageous nature was much more befitted to Gryffindor. However, as a child, Snape's sadism, disdain for Muggles and sheer ambition made him an obvious Slytherin when he first came to Hogwarts. They were often underestimated however because of their small stature. Their loyalty also prevented them from using magic against their masters until they were free. This amounted to their reputation as push overs and leading lives of abuse.

When he could no longer resist the ring, Boromir attempted to snag it from Frodo. Part of me leaned towards Gryffindor, but I landed on Hufflepuff because of Frodo’s thoughtful, kind and compassionate nature. All he craves is a quiet life with his friends at the Shire.

Kreacher

Those house-elves were small, but they had big personalities. Sauron created the “one ring to rule them all” — because he is power-hungry and wants to rule over all of Middle Earth. Arwen boldly leaves behind everything she knows to start a life with Aragorn.

Her father warns her that a life with Aragorn will end in sadness, but she pushes against his wishes and bravely steps into the unknown. This proves how loyal Aragorn is to Frodo and that he would stay with him until the very end if it had been necessary — typical Gryffindor behavior. Once he had the ring, he turned into Gollum — a creature willing to do just about anything for the ring. Slytherins are known for their determination to get what they want.

Harry’s loyalty to his friends, and bravery in the face of danger, was something that defined him both as a Gryffindor and also as the hero of the books. A veritable legion of house-elves were enlisted by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to help out the entire school instead of serving one master. They worked in the kitchens, preparing feasts for the entire school. They also presumably moved trunks and baggage to and from rooms, cleaned dormitories, and presumably other areas of the castle as well.

But, as the Battle of Hogwarts demonstrated, even that could be overcome. He had a few – let’s call it ‘curious’ – judgement issues (like that time he sent a jinxed Bludger after Harry during a Quidditch match), but he always meant well. Dobby initially served the Malfoy family but was set free when Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving him a sock. ’Dobby has no master… Dobby is a free elf,’ he told Bellatrix, shortly before his demise in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Originating in the southern areas, one specific legend about farfadets is that they were "wrinkled, brown-skinned midgets who went around either naked or wearing dirty rags", a description that is almost identical to Rowling's elves. The Farfadets would help around a farming home, completing tasks not done in the day by the human servants.

For example, Kreacher was once simply demanded by Sirius Black to "get out". Sirius meant the kitchen but he chose to interpret it to mean that he had to "get out" of the house even though he knew that was not the intention. They try to do that when they feel when they are not treated kindly. If Dobby represented one thing, it was that even the most ingrained behaviours can be changed with a little education. Yet never was bravery demonstrated so strongly than in Dobby, who risked everything to save the life of the young wizard, with whom he had no real personal connection.

Dobby might just be one of the most progressive house-elves we’ve heard of – and his independent status made the other house-elves feel uncomfortable. Sadly, living to serve was too deeply engrained in their culture. This was not the first time Dobby used unorthodox methods to protect Harry. How about the time he cursed a Bludger to follow Harry around the Quidditch pitch, which resulted in Harry receiving a broken arm… which then became a boneless arm, thanks to Gilderoy Lockhart’s ineptitude. Alright, to be fair to Dobby, no one could have predicted that a Hogwarts professor would actually remove the bones from a student’s limb, but there we go. Their friendship with the Ents (an army of giant, talking trees) perfectly explains their Hufflepuffness.

For example, despite his loathing for Sirius Black, Kreacher could not disobey his direct orders. However, when Sirius yelled at him to "get out", which he meant to get out of the kitchen, Kreacher was able to interpret the command in a way that enabled him to leave number 12 Grimmauld Place and go to Sirius' cousins, Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Harry Potter once remarked that house-elves were better at performing advanced magic than wizards,[6] which was testament to the impressive strength of their magical power. Willed to be absolutely obedient to every word and command, a house-elf's only escape would be freedom via the gift of clothes by their master.

Some claim he is pretentious — which might be true — but he is not power hungry. He is desperate to avoid the ring and all the consequences that come with it. The “Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” fandoms might be the biggest ones out there. Without help from the sorting hat, I sorted each of the “Lord of the Rings” characters into one of the four Hogwarts houses. Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, and resourcefulness and was founded by Salazar Slytherin.

Unlike Dobby, Winky was someone who felt lost when she was handed her own freedom. When we met Winky, she was serving the Crouch family – as her mother, and her grandmother before her did – until she was abruptly fired after being implicated in the casting of the Dark Mark in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Dobby became an anomaly among house-elves – he was happy to be a ‘free elf’, and was not ashamed to ask to be paid for his work. This made finding employment a little difficult, until he was finally offered a job at Hogwarts.

But he never seeks power or glory and at the beginning of his journey, he chooses to remain a ranger rather than take over as king. He enters the fellowship out of a sense of duty and ethics. Aragorn’s courage, chivalry and loyalty to the fellowship are what makes him a Gryffindor. As Gandalf the White, otherwise known as the most powerful wizard of all time, he displays traits from every Hogwarts house, but he still relies on wisdom to make decisions, and therefore, he remains a Ravenclaw. As the fellowship’s leader, Gandalf relies on his deep knowledge and experience to guide them.
