41 Must-Do Activities Aboard Royal Caribbean Ships

A wraparound promenade that’s near the water, it features a wide walkway along with outdoor seating for restaurants. The result is a relaxing spot where you can walk and enjoy yourself while reconnecting with why people fell in love with cruising in the first place — the ocean. Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have extensive kids clubs aboard their ships that cater to all ages, from babies to teens.

Take a Dip in the Pool

Live music is about as synonymous with cruising as food, sun and fun. You'll hear it just about everywhere throughout the day on most vessels. Some lines, however, have found ways to take game shows up a notch.

Drenched Days

Don’t miss the fun, especially if you’re cruising for the first time. Most onboard activities are free, including music around the ship, trivia contests, Ping-Pong, use of the basketball and sports courts and more. Activities that carry a fee include tastings (wine, beer, whiskey), bingo and some interactive classes like cooking or cupcake decorating. On newer ships, activities like go-karts, laser tag, escape rooms and virtual-reality game play might cost extra. Some of these activities also require reservations; check your daily planner for specifics. While cruise ships continue to get larger and offer more amenities that take you away from the ocean, The Waterfront… or also known as Oceanwalk on some ships… does the opposite.

Given how fast-paced most of our lives are these days, it’s the ultimate luxury to just be able to sit still in your own private space without having to do anything at all. If you have teenagers, they will likely want to hit the arcade. You’ll find one across the fleet, no matter which ship you sail. It’s a great way for the kids to spend an hour or two on their own having a fun time. During our trips games have been fairly new, but be warned that they can be expensive.

On Celebrity, wine-loving cruisers benefit from the line's link-up with The Wine Show, a UK-based TV series, and MSC's Italian heritage shines during such presentations at its wine bars. Further, if you'd just like a quick self-served glass, we'll shout out the Enomatic wine dispensers on NCL, Royal, Celebrity and Azamara vessels. Most cruise lines offer some form of this, but there are a few standout programs.

Theme Nights

Sea days can be a great time to have lunch in a specialty restaurant for a reduced price as well. If you’re on a Caribbean cruise, one of the favorite hangouts on the cruise ship will be the pools and hot tubs. Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class cruise ships are some of the coolest cruise ships at sea! On these 220,000 ton mega ships, you’ll find some incredible activities and attractions, including a zip line that rises 14 decks over the cruise ship’s boardwalk neighborhood.

And if your ship has a Waterfront area, then they will also have a seating area where you can sit out and enjoy your smoke while watching the waves. And like any good pool, there will always be a bar right nearby to where you can grab anything you want to sip on while you soak up the sun or hang out in the water. It may be simple, but it’s hard to think of anything more enjoyable to do on your cruise. Our boutique-style shops are filled with renowned brands, souvenirs, clothing and sundry items. You will also find great deals on duty-free favorites like liquor and tobacco products, jewelry, perfumes, watches and much more. Find a spot in the sun and enjoy your favorite book while relaxing on a chaise lounge.

One unique thing we’ve seen on some ships are their own scratch-off lottery tickets. Volleyball, soccer, free-throws, ping-pong… if you think you’re good enough then enter one of the tournaments that the cruise line hosts. There are also trivia contests later in the day where you can compete against other passengers for bragging rights… and maybe a small trophy.

Pickleball, which incorporates elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is fun for all levels of expertise, easy to play, and great for staying fit on a cruise. Keep up your running habit during your vacation, or simply power walk around the track that you’ll find on every Celebrity ship. Royal Caribbean has a feature on some ships — a huge sphere that sits high atop the ship. It’s a thrill where you are attached to bungee cords via a harness and then start jumping on a trampoline. Most of what you need — including skates — are provided for you.

It’s relaxing to play and a fun way to get a little competition while on the ship. Best of all, it’s free to play; sticks and discs are normally kept right by the boards on the ship. Then there are exclusive pools, restaurants, and lounges that are only for guests staying in Haven rooms. It’s not for everyone, but those wanting the swankiest stay on the ship should check it out. The lounge wraps around the entire front of the ship featuring a ton of spots to sit and watch the ocean and scenery go by.

That is a personal choice and what you want from your cruise vacation. It’s one of the things to do on a Royal Caribbean cruise, most notably on Harmony of the Seas and its sister ships. Carnival, Disney, MSC, NCL, and Royal Caribbean all have cruise ships with rope courses. One of my favorite things to do on a cruise, specifically on a Celebrity cruise, is to sit and order a drink at the Martini Bar.

This is one of those free cruise activities that can be quite entertaining. Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises do this well by showing popular movies on a giant screen by the pool. They’ll hand out popcorn and blankets, so you can cozy up under the stars and watch movies.

Although most lines charge for the privilege, some luxury lines include basic options in their pricing. There's far too much to say about cruise drinks in such a short amount of space, but they're plentiful, with menus often touting fruity cocktails made for days spent lazing in the sun. Depending on how much you plan to consume, an alcohol package could be a smart idea. This classic pastime is available on voyages with just about every mainstream cruise line. Although most prizes are cruise lined branded swag, some -- including cash and free cruises -- are more than worth the price of admission.

It’s usually a smaller fee per person and not as much as what you would pay if you went on a tour on land. We like to set a small budget for the nights we decide to spend some time playing. Sometimes, cruises have day passes available to the thermal spa, but this is rare. You don’t have to spend anything on a cruise vacation to keep busy and have a fabulous vacation. You can tell the bartenders are always in a good mood and make some of the best martinis. You can watch them show off their bartending skills if you’re there at the right time.

Learning is a never-ending process, so it makes sense that there would be chances for enrichment on vacation, too. On a cruise, you might find talks related to the areas you're visiting, health and wellness evaluations or shopping seminars used to try to sell you something. Royal Caribbean, for instance, has started to offer their All-Access Tour again. Normally, these tours come with a fee, and it's not always cheap. The cost also often helps to keep numbers small, ensuring a more intimate experience. On a Royal Caribbean ship, you can choose from the latest game trends or go old-school to compete with others and prove who is the best.
